Emma Roberts Emma graduated from the Australian National University with a Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Studies / Law and was the 2014 New Colombo Plan Yudhoyono (Indonesia) Fellow. Through her NCP scholarship, Emma studied at the Gadjah Mada University Faculty of Law in Yogyakarta, undertook research on barriers to legal justice for victims of gender-based violence in Java and interned with the Indonesian Women’s Association for Justice in Jakarta. The NCP support Emma to participated in the Australia-ASEAN Emerging Leaders Program (A2ELP) and Asia Pacific Roundtable (APR) in Kuala Lumpur as one of 20 delegates from the Australia-ASEAN region.

Benjamin McPhillips Benjamin McPhillips completed a Certificate IV in Screen and Media at TAFE New England in Armidale in 2013. In 2014, he commenced a Diploma of Modern Languages majoring in Japanese Languages, which was transferred in 2015 to a Bachelor of Arts Majoring in Japanese at the University of New England Armidale. From September 2016 to February 2017, Benjamin with the help of a New Colombo Plan mobility grant studied Japanese at Daito Bunka University located in Higashimatsuyama in Saitama Prefecture Japan. Benjamin is continuing his studies and will graduate in 2018. Benjamin has volunteered at a local foodbank and St Vincents De Paul.

He also has worked with Greenlife Merchandising, and currently works at Cascades Car Wash and the University bookshop on a casual basis. Jasmin Hammond Jasmin Hammond is the 2017-18 New Colombo Plan Indigenous Alumni Ambassador. Jasmin is a Ngemba woman from Brewarrina, New South Wales. She is currently in her third year of a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery at Western Sydney University. She was the first Indigenous person to receive the New Colombo Plan Scholarship and was among the first cohort of 40 in 2014 to receive this scholarship. Through the NCP scholarship, in 2014 she travelled to Hong Kong to study at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology chemistry and environmental health subjects as a part of her degree at the time for one semester. Whilst in Hong Kong, Jasmin also undertook Mandarin language classes.

Her ambitions in life include improving Indigenous health and education. Julie-Anne Ball Julie-Anne Ball is currently studying a Bachelor of Business (International Business Major).

Leonie Nahhas Leonie Nahhas is in the final year of a Bachelor of Arts – Psychology with a Degree in Education (primary) at Macquarie University, Sydney. Through a NCP scholarship, Leonie pursued her studies in psychology and education at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore for a full academic year. She also completed internships with community groups and social enterprises in Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines and Indonesia. Each internship was relevant to her academic qualification and professional development in the areas of psychology and education, and her internship projects targeted the UN Sustainable Development Goals of Good Health and Well-being, and Quality Education. Leonie’s aspiration is to one day contribute to learning, teaching and advocacy in the field of mental health, both in Australia and across the Indo-Pacific region, and believes her internship experiences were a key step on the path of realising her aspiration. Leonie is now completing her final semester and preparing to undertake Honours in Psychology next year.

Patrick Gan Patrick Gan completed a Bachelor of Business from Western Sydney University in 2017. From 2014-16, as part of a New Colombo Plan Scholarship, he studied economics and finance subjects at Meiji University in Japan. He also interned for Mitsui & Co, National Australia Bank and the Australian and New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan in their Tokyo offices.

Upon returning to Australia, Patrick spent some time working for J.P.Morgan and now works with the School of Business at Western Sydney University. Sonia Parulekar Sonia Parulekar is currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Commerce (Co-op) at the University of New South Wales. In 2015, she studied business and information systems at the University of Malaya in Malaysia through a New Colombo Plan scholarship. She also interned with PwC in their management consulting practice in Singapore. In 2017 she interned at CK Hutchison in their group technology services division in Hong Kong.

In Australia, she has worked at the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Westpac Group and A.T. Thomas Da Jose Thomas Da Jose is on track to completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil), Diploma in Engineering Practice with First Class Honours from the University of Technology Sydney in 2017. In 2016, Thomas studied international business management at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. During his in-country immersion as part of a New Colombo Plan scholarship, he also interned with Meinhardt and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. His learnings were strengthened by his understanding of Chinese Business Studies at Sun Yat-sen University in 2017.

Thomas will shortly commence his role as a Graduate Project Manager at AECOM in Sydney. Wendy Xiao Wendy Xiao completed a Bachelor of Science (Advanced), majoring in Plant Science, at the University of Sydney in 2017.

Through a New Colombo Plan scholarship, she studied agricultural science at Solomon Islands National University in 2016. After her studies, she undertook an internship at Kastom Gaden Association, a local NGO focussing on subsistence farming training. She then interned at Solomon Islands Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, engaging in the monitoring and evaluation of agricultural projects and agricultural extension. Northern Territory.

Jared Ivory Jared Ivory is in his final semester of a Bachelor of Laws at Charles Darwin University. In 2014, he studied customary law and transnational crime at Universitas Udayana in Bali, Indonesia, funded by a New Colombo Plan mobility grant. As a 2015 New Colombo Plan Scholar, he studied two semesters of law at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He also completed a six-month internship with the Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation in Semarang, Indonesia.

Jared is currently working with the Northern Territory Government on the Royal Commission into the Detention and Protection of Children. Caleb Mattiske Caleb Mattiske is completing a Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Business at the University of the Sunshine Coast, majoring in international business and geography.

He commenced his 2016 NCP Scholarship in Seoul, completing a short-term language course at Ewha Womans University, followed by a semester at Konkuk University studying both geography and business subjects. He completed his time in Seoul interning with the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Korea before spending three months in Fiji interning with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Oceania Regional Office.

During his time with IUCN, Caleb attended the organisation’s 2016 World Conservation Congress and be part of a delegation visiting Tonga. Jaime McLovin Jaime McLovin is a proud father of six, with both he and his wife enrolled in their second year of a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood major) at CQUniversity. Jaime is currently on the CQUniveristy Student Representative Council and represents both the Rockhampton and Yeppoon campuses. Between 2010 and 2016, he represented CQUniversity Rugby Union in the 1st XV for seven seasons. Jaime is a Christian and in 2015 completed a one year internship with his local Rockhampton church, volunteering one whole year of his life to God, which included completing his certificate 4 in Children's Ministry and a one month International Missions trip in Vanuatu. In 2017, he was part of a 16 day learning experience in India, Delhi and Mumbai, as part of a New Colombo Plan mobility grant. His time in India was spent with IndoGenius.

Derek Davies Derek Davies is in his final year of a Bachelor of Arts study at James Cook University, majoring in Politics and International Relations at James Cook University’s Townsville Campus in Far North Queensland. In 2017, he undertook a semester abroad as part of a NCP mobility grant studying journalism subjects at the National University of Samoa.

During his time abroad, Derek featured in a local instructional film produced by UNESCO and International Programme for the Development of Communication, which will be used to teach trade skills to future Journalists and News Camera Operators in Samoa. Other highlights include an internship at the Samoa Observer where he managed to get several of his stories published—including two on the front page. He also helped to produce an educational documentary to raise awareness on Gender-Based Violence in the Samoan school system with his NUS classmates. Joel Adsett Joel Adsett is currently completing his final semester of a Bachelor of Business (Finance)/Bachelors of Laws (Honours) dual degree from Queensland University of Technology. In 2015/16, as a New Colombo Plan scholar, he studied international business and Asian studies subjects at Universitas Bina Nusantara in Jakarta, Indonesia. He also interned with Cardno Emerging Markets and the Australia Trade and Investment Commission in Indonesia, and with ANZ Banking Group in Singapore. Joel will commence with a global strategy consulting firm in Sydney in 2018.

Mitchell Horrocks Mitchell Horrocks graduated from a Bachelor of Actuarial Science at Bond University in mid-2017. Through a New Colombo Plan mobility grant, he undertook an exchange to Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in 2016. Whilst there he studied both actuarial and finance subjects with the Nanyang Business School. On his exchange Mitchell also visited Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong and Macau.

Currently Mitchell is completing a degree of Actuarial Science (Honours) at Bond University and should finish by the end of the year. Mitchell hopes to become a qualified actuary some time in the future.

Patrick Walsh Patrick Walsh completed Bachelors of Science/Arts from the University of Queensland in 2016. Through a New Colombo Plan scholarship, he spent a semester at the University of the South Pacific studying Pacific history and French in 2016. He also interned with the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in Suva and the National Archives of Fiji and then travelled to New Delhi to intern for the Observer Research Foundation. Patrick is now back at the University of Queensland completing History Honours.

Sarah Griffin Sarah Griffin is currently completing her Bachelor of Laws/Government and International Relations at Griffith University and will graduate in 2018. She will commence her honours in law in 2018. Sarah studied politics, religion, international warfare and mandarin at The University of Hong Kong through a New Colombo Plan scholarship. She also interned with Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, DLA Piper and Trade and Investment Queensland.

Sarah is currently undertaking the clerkship process in Brisbane. South Australia. Charlie Hamra Charlie Hamra is currently a student at the University of Adelaide, and will complete his Bachelor Degrees in Law and International Studies at the end of2017. He was the New Colombo Plan Fellow for India in 2016. As part of his New Colombo Plan scholarship, Charlie studied in the Political Science Department at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi, undertook an internship at the Centre for Escalation of Peace, and began to learn Hindi.

In 2018 he will be Associate to the Honourable Justice Bampton of the Supreme Court of South Australia. Fawaaz Karim Fawaaz Karim is currently undertaking Bachelor Degrees in law, accounting and economics at Flinders University with expected completion in 2018. In 2015, he undertook a commerce exchange program at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore through a New Colombo Plan mobility grant. Deloitte in Singapore. Since the completion of his exchange, he has worked with Spire Research and Consulting, Infrastructure Finance Australia, BankSA and most recently the Government of South Australia. Michelle Howie Michelle Howie is a fourth year University of South Australia Student in a Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics and Communications).

As part of her NCP scholarship, in the summer of 2015, she studied intensive Korean Language training in Seoul before a semester exchange at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Daejon, Korea as an Electronics Engineer. In 2016 Michelle interned in Network Services at Telstra in Hong Kong. She also did a second full exchange at Chung Ang University in Seoul, South Korea in 2016. She is currently a full-time student working part time in hospitality and employed by the State Government as a Study Adelaide Student Ambassador. Emily Forsyth As the 2015 New Colombo Plan Fellow for Vanuatu, Emily Forsyth studied law at the University of the South Pacific. She has also been involved in mentoring UTAS students as they prepare for their NCP programs. Emily graduated from UTAS with first class honours in December 2016 and was the university medallist for law. She is completing a practical legal training course while working at a law firm in Tasmania.

She is the inaugural alumni representative on the NCP Reference Group. Austin Wyatt Austin Wyatt completed a Bachelor of Arts (Security and Counter Terrorism) from Swinburne University in 2016. In 2016, he completed the second semester of his Honours research at KAIST in the Republic of Korea through a NCP scholarship. He also undertook a four-month research internship at the Centre of Robotics for Field Exploration, Innovation and Defence at KAIST. Austin is now working on a PhD at the Australian Catholic University, examining the regional security implications of the deployment of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems in East Asia. Austin is also the Deputy Chairperson at the I Can Network, Australia’s first social enterprise run by people on the Autism Spectrum and a Committee of Management member at Greenhills Neighbourhood House. Catherine Elliott Catherine Elliott is completing her Honours year at Federation University Australia after graduating from a Bachelor of Commerce Economics at the end of 2016.

In 2015, Cate studied in Singapore with a group from the Federation University Business School on a New Colombo Plan mobility grant. In her final year Cate went on exchange to South Korea at PKNU and studied Korean language, International Relations and Economic Geography of Europe and Asia also as part of a New Colombo Plan mobility grant. Cate expects to work diplomatically and will be applying for various public service graduate programs in 2018, including DFAT, and intends to work within the Asia Pacific region. Jake Schatz Jake Schatz studied a Bachelor of Business at La Trobe University, Bendigo and majored in human resources and accounting. In 2015, Jake was awarded a New Colombo Plan Scholarship for Hong Kong, and undertook one semester study at Lingnan University. Jake was the inaugural New Colombo Plan intern at QBE Insurance, where he completed a six-month stint in human resources across QBE’s local and regional business units. Jake is currently employed as a management consultant at Deloitte in Melbourne, as well as an Officer Cadet with the Australian Army Reserve.

Sarah Hawkins Sarah Hawkins is in her final year of a double degree, a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours)/Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) from RMIT. In 2016, Sarah completed social work and psychology subjects at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong. During Sarah’s New Colombo Plan scholarship, she completed an internship with St. Stephen’s Society assisting in a residential program for at-risk teenagers to re-engage them in education and develop their family relationships. Sarah also visited St Stephens Society’s anti-human trafficking projects in Cebu, Philippines. Sarah has worked in a range of roles in child, youth and family services and is currently working with the Department of Health and Human Services as a Disability Development and Support Officer.

Evan Webb Evan Webb completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Environmental Management from Edith Cowan University in 2016. He spent the final semester of his degree studying at Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry in Vietnam through a New Colombo Plan scholarship. He also undertook an internship at the Endangered Primate Rescue Center in Cuc Phuong National Park, where he worked to conserve some of the most endangered primates on the planet.

Evan is now working at 360 Environmental in Perth. Hannah Pratt Hannah Pratt completed a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies) at Murdoch University in 2016. As a New Colombo Plan Indonesia scholar, she studied Indonesian language subjects and Islamic Business at Universitas Gadjah Madah (UGM) and Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) in Indonesia in 2015. She also interned with ACICIS and SAPDA (the Centre for Advocacy for Women Children and Persons with Disabilities) during her year in Indonesia. Hannah is now working as a Graduate Officer with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development in the Strategy and Evaluation Division in Perth. James Panarettos James Panarettos completed a Bachelor of Philosophy with First Class Honours in Economics at the University of Western Australia in 2016.

He undertook a semester of his finance major at the National University of Singapore in 2015 and the fieldwork component of his final Honours project at Peking University HSBC Business School in Shenzhen, China in 2016. While in Singapore, through his NCP scholarship, he undertook a three-month internship at BHP, providing business improvement consulting service. James has also managed an education charity that provides free one-on-one tuition to 10,000 disadvantaged students each year and has worked as a risk consultant at PwC. He is now a Strategy Analyst at Navitas in Perth.
