After a hiatus, Cena returned on the December 28 episode of Raw, defeating Del Rio by disqualification in a rematch for the title. On the January 7, 2016 episode of SmackDown taped on January 5, Cena aided at ringside to victory against Del Rio. That same day he underwent surgery on a shoulder injury, which would keep him out of action for an undisclosed amount of time. On the December 13 episode of SmackDown Live it was announced that Cena would be returning on the December 27 episode. Free agent (2017–present) Cena appeared on the Memorial Day episode of Raw on May 29, providing a voice over for the opening video package. On the June 6 episode of SmackDown, it was announced that Cena would make his return to the brand on the July 4 episode.
